The power of brand loyalty

Over the past couple months I have been influenced by the sheer power of brand loyalty. My wife is a Kohl’s “poweruser” (that’s a phrase I just made up so don’t go looking for a way to get that same status) and she’s damn proud of it. She collects her Kohl’s cash, she waits for her 10, 15, 20 or even 30% coupons to come in the mail and she listens intently to their commercials for when their next sale is going to be. What’s more interesting to me is the way she and her friends talk about the brand and even challenge each other to get bigger and better deals by combining their Kohl’s cash and/or X% off coupons.

I mentioned on the outset that I have been influenced by this particular brand’s power, more specifically the power of the brand’s loyalty. So what does this mean? Well, in this age of  “Like” and “Google Plus” the brand’s loyal patrons talk about their deals and steals the old fashioned way – at soccer games and even tailgate parties. But the take away is not the quality or amount of the stuff they purchased but rather the money they saved. In this economic climate, saving is king and a big brand like Kohl’s is rewarding their loyal patrons, all while receiving precious recommendations by the mouthful.

I never used to shop at Kohl’s, but now it’s the first stop I make when purchasing anything from my brand new Ninja Blender to a pair of basketball shorts. However, I never pay full price because I know exactly when the sale is and if we have a “30%-er”!

Falling for fall

Moose A. MooseIn the immortal words of Moose A. Moose’s, “I think I am falling for fall…”, we here at Dakota-Diesel feel the same way. Who is Moose A. Moose? Ask your kids or someone’s kids and they’ll tell you. Anywho, fall is the best season ever and every year right about this time we’re reminded of that very fact. This weekend in the Philadelphia area the weather is gonna be perfect for the tons of outdoor festivals, football and soccer games. So, it got us thinking about what other things we noticed about this time of year, so we made a quick list that we’d like to share and hopefully you’ll add your .02.

Here goes in no particular order:

1. Back to Football

The NFL‘s huge marketing reach can be felt everywhere and this year, even with the lockout, is no different. The tagline “Back to Football” sets up perfectly as a play off of “Back to School”. Football is the best ice-breaker for guys with kids to talk with other guys with kids while watching those kids play the other football.

2. Back to School

If you have kids than “Back to School” is awesome even if “Back to Football” slightly overshadows it. It’s great because it gets everyone back into production mode. No more slacking off on your parental duties – you got homework to help out with, parent/teacher meetings and lunches to pack. I would think this production has to spill over into the workplace which brings me to the next point.

3. Q4 Budgets

I can’t speak for all of advertising, but we’ve seen a steady uptick in business the past Septembers and Octobers with execs coming back from vacations and finding “use it or lose it” budgets they must spend.

4. Fall Beer

Fall BeerSummer variety packs are solid, but fall/octoberfest variety packs are the bees knees. Every year the micro breweries like Magic Hat get more and more creative with their packaging and promotions. They have to get creative to stay afloat with the market getting flooded with micro brews that were once only available in local areas find their way to other regions of the country. Bottoms Up — The True Influence of Social Marketing

For all of you skeptics out there debating the role of social media, I dare you to find another medium that will coax a grown man to drink his own urine!!!

If a Bear pees in the woods...

The power and influence of these channels are becoming a force that can no longer be ignored by clients—regardless of their vertical, business goals or current marketing mix.  We work with a variety of different clients (big and small) but they all have one thing in common— their desire to have a presence in the social-sphere and we’re not about to talk them out of it.

Don’t get the wrong impression, we’re not in the business of just doing “because the client asked us to”…we guide our clients and partners down a path to make sure their social strategy has a prioritization set by tactic while providing them a clear understanding of what the expectations are for both the end users and the internal team that will be managing/nurturing the channels (a recent statistics I read stated that 25% of Twitter accounts are baron with no history of tweets)

At the end of the day, I’m not really crediting twitter for making Bear drink his waste water— then again, peer pressure has proven it can even get to the best of us!

Infographic Bonanza

Here’s a sampling of some infographics that we’ve found on the interweb that we thought you would enjoy. There’s plenty of resources for infographics including Fast Company’s Infographic of the Day, of course the old stand-by USA Today Snapshots and finally the Infographic Showcase.

So what makes a good infographic, well it’s clear depiction of a complex concept and it’s inter-relationship within itself. In other words the design of the infographic needs to have recognizable iconic representations of the subject matter as well as a solid layout to show how everything goes together.

Of course, interactivity and animation adds another dimension to the way a graphic communicates, but if it can work without it even better.
